Kuruvi - Review
Kuruvi is Vijay-Dharani hit combo’s latest “extravaganza” to hit the theatres this May… But I did not have big expectations for it when I sat down to watch it today. And I was proved right.
Before we go any further let me give you a gist of positives and negatives about the movie:
Negatives :
Loud Shouting by the Villains and the Hero in the name of dialogues and… well “punch dialogues”, not up-to-the-mark music by Vidhyasagar, an old and haggard looking heroine - Trisha, tasteless comedy by Vivek
Positives :
Vijay, an above average screenplay, an amazing fight sequence BGM, and Vijay
Story
The Hero’s Dad is shut-up in a jail-like rock quarry in Cuddapah along with a bunch of other people made to work like slaves. One fine day, the Villains decide to shoot two of the guys who work at the quarry and Vijay’s Dad loudly vows that his son will one day come and save them all, in the process shedding some blood. How Vijay saves them and also succesfully ties the knot with the villain’s younger sister is the story. Sounds simple right? Nope… It is far more complicated than that. To do this, Vijay has to win a car race, show his middle finger to his opponent, fly over to Malaysia to steal a diamond, jump off some tall towers in Malaysia along with the Heroine managing to drop her off in a swimming pool, the heroine has to fall in love with him conveniently for this heroic act, has to fight bunches and bunches of goons managing to dodge thousands of bullets of which none find their target, run and jump off a building squarely landing on a railway track half a kilometre away and yet manage to catch the train at full speed, almost get drowned by being caught inside a lift being dropped from the top of a run down shack, has to break open the lift inside the water and emerge from a dirty pool unharmed and unscathed … you thought this was over? NOPE!!! This is only half the movie…
The other half is spent in the quarrys of Cuddapah crunching the bones of yet a hundred more villains and finnaly saving his dad and his people from harm from the villains.
WOW! What crap!!
Music
LOUUUUUD is an understatement. Mozhu Mozhunnu song had all the aspects of a telugu song with some crappy lyrics and equally crappy sets straight out a Chiranjeevi movie. Palaanathu was average but had wrong timing in the film. Overall, none of the songs were really up to expectation. Vidhyasagar dissapoints.
Characters
Vijay is your perfect hero… superhero. He drives race cars with consummate ease, jumps off roof tops effortlessly, dodges bullets putting Keanu Reaves in Matrix to shame, and in one scene flies about half a kilometre, lands on his feet and manages to catch a train. Wow.
Trisha has nothing much to do except to look cute and pretty in the movie and yet she fails miserably. Her age seems to be catching up with her and she must look to restrict herself to samy like characters in the future.
Vivek puts on a hapless excuse for a comedy. Inevitably he comes out tasteless and garish.
Manivannan has very little to do except taking a vow at the villains at the beginning and disappearing for about 90% of the movie and then re-appearing at the end.
Ashish Vidyarthi, Suman and a younger Villain together pose no problems for our Superhero… acting as punching bags and shouting loudly. I was made to believe that they were trying to scare off the hero with their own superpower in the movie - the ability to shout very very loudly.
Vijay’s Mother - In her previous film Ghilli, she acted as the mother of Prakash Raj and the wife of a politician and I thought she fit the role to perfection. Here, she looks completely lost. With the look of a vamp but given the role of a loving mother, the poor being seems to struggle like the soul of a giant caught inside a small child.
Saranya - Wasted as Trisha’s Mom. She might have gotten away enacting the role of Vijay’s Mom much better.
The Fight BGM - Rocks… I thought the fight BGM with the Urumi Melam Sound really had some character to it… This was the only thing I liked in the movie…
Verdict
Not worth it… Go watch Iron Man
