Sony Ericsson K850i Freezes while Dialing a Number
Yeah! That pretty much keeps happening to my phone for the past 6 months. Well, for a while I decided to bear with it till it got to a point that it became unbearable. I just had to do something about it. Here’s what I did…
1) I downloaded the latest firmware update from the Sony Ericsson Site and updated my K850i. Turned the phone off, battery out and in, turned the phone on, and dialled a number thats NOT on my phonebook. Still freezes.
2) Called up customer care. The guy who attended the phone in Delhi, acknowledged the fact that it was not a new problem to which he couldn’t help me. His first suggestion was for me to upgrade the firmware. I told him that this gave me no joy, after which he asked me to drop into the nearby service centre about 10 miles from my place. So No Luck there.
3) I turned off the edge conection, all the fancy features like vibration OFF on the touch keys, automatic contact search option, Voice Acivated Dialling, Security locks etc. Rebooted the phone, tried dialing a number. Still had the same problem.
4) Finally, I did a RESET ALL Master Reset and Wiped Off my phone restoring it back to its default form. Rebooted. When it ran the initial setup, I set the time and date, set the language as default to sim and finally WHEN IT ASKED ME IF I WANTED TO COPY THE SIM CONTACTS TO THE PHONE, I CHOSE NO. This WORKED!! Now my phone doesn’t freeze anymore.
So here is what has happened. When the sim contacts are copied to the phone contact book, there are two sets of contacts maintained. One in the sim and the other in the phone. When I try to dial a number thats not on my contact list, the phone searches if there is already such a contact existing in the contacts, and displays the contact name if there IS a match. If there is no match, the dialing screen comes on. All this happens in a few milliseconds. But the software gets stuck when it looks for the matching contact, and hence the display is frozen at the number stage.
Hope search engines pick up this post and it proves to be helpful for others tearing their hair apart.
